Review: LEGO 21272 Woodland Mansion Fighting Ring (A Minecraft Movie)

LEGO and Minecraft have proved to be a match made in heaven ever since those first Micro World sets landed in 2012 (recently celebrated in 2024 with the excellent 21265 The Crafting Table), marrying the two blocky properties perfectly with sets that have grown in diversity and creativity at the same pace as the game itself.
And with Minecraft about to make its big foray into the world of cinema with a feature film debuting in less than a couple of weeks, it’s only fitting that the LEGO Minecraft theme should tackle some (hopefully) iconic scenes from A Minecraft Movie. Better yet, since A Minecraft Movie stars some substantial Hollywood talent it’s resulted in a host of minifigure debuts, in particular a minifig version of Jack Black’s role as Steve, which is essentially just Jack Black in a blue shirt. Fantastic.
So far, we’ve got two sets based on A Minecraft Movie, both launched on 1 March 2025, so let’s look at one of them right now – 21272 Woodland Mansion Fighting Ring.

21272 Woodland Mansion Fighting RingMinifigures
These new A Minecraft Movie sets aren’t just a big deal because they’re the first to be based on the live-action take on Minecraft, but because they feature minifigures based on celebrity roles in the film. Woodland Mansion Fighting Ring comes with three of these, based on Steve (Jack Black), Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa) and Henry (Sebastian Hansen).
Steve is naturally the most exciting of these, given he’s portrayed in the film by Jack Black and with very minimal work done by the film’s wardrobe/costuming department to give the impression that it’s not just Jack Black roaming around the world of Minecraft. While that might seem a bit half-baked, it’s resulted in some very amusing toy lines, including this one. Because what we have here is, arguably, just a LEGO Jack Black:

The Jack Steve minifig is pretty straightforward, with only the body and head elements being unique, though both capture the character quite nicely. Steve’s face can either feature a very recognisable smirk or a menacing scowl, and his blue top wouldn’t look right without the faint outline of an iconic belly. The set also comes with three recurring LEGO Minecraft weapons for Steve and the others to wield including a titanium sword as well as silver and lavender axes.

The minifig version of Garrett (Jason Momoa) is a lot more eye-catching, with the character’s bright pink jacket nicely represented with some decent printed detail and black gloves, along with his face – one side flashing a winning smile and some very shiny shades, and the other with shades off and a frightened gasp. Amusingly, rather than go with a unique hair mould the one used here will be familiar to anyone who’s built a LEGO Harry Potter set featuring one Hermione Granger. I think it suits Jason Momoa better, if you ask me.

Finally, Henry (Sebastian Hansen) gets another well-rendered representation with his red hoodie, satchel bag and shorter legs. Having not seen the film yet, I’m unsure what the blue-and-white detail is on the front of Henry’s hoodie (it kind of looks like a name tag, which isn’t something seen in the trailers), but overall it’s easily identifiable as the character.

The real star of this set though, in my eyes, is the Chicken Jockey. Based on a rare phenomenon in the Minecraft game where a baby zombie spawns riding around on a chicken, it’s portrayed here by a squat zombie minifigure sat on top of a brick-built chicken. The prints on the zombie’s green, cuboid head and body are more detailed than in prior LEGO Minecraft sets, owing to it being based on the pseudo-realistic cinema version and look pretty good overall. The chicken is also different to previous iterations with what I believe is a new eye panel print and a slightly-posable leg construction.
They’re so cute together:

The Fighting Ring
The first major feature of the Woodland Mansion Fighting Ring set is, unsurprisingly, the Fighting Ring. This is something that can be glimpsed in some of the recent trailers for A Minecraft Movie, where it appears that at least one of the characters finds themselves squaring off against opponents from the Minecraft World. In the film scene it’s seemingly Garrett and Steve versus a Chicken Jockey, which is presumably why we’ve got them all here in the set.

In this set, that idea has been translated to an interactive fighting ring that’s reminiscent of toys from the 80s/90s like Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots and Hungry, Hungry Hippos. Two platform constructions are attached to some long Technic axles atop turn plates – giving them room to be poked around inside the confines of the ring with a couple of minifigures on top to simulate a fight! There are even some score counters along the front that can be tilted down to keep track of who’s won points by causing their opponent’s minifig to fly off their platform.

It’s good to see this movie-inspired set continue the ideas of play and creativity that are a key part of the standard Minecraft theme, especially because kids can make an actual game out of it and square off against siblings, parents or friends.

The next part of the set sees builders construct a bit of the environment around the ring, though just a singular wall in this case. This part was enjoyable enough to build, though it’s pretty straightforward. After the wall goes up, it’s embellished with a bit of decoration including some weapon holders, torch sconces, a treasure chest and a couple of potions.
If I had to level a bit of criticism at this section of the set, and in fact the set as a whole, it’s that there’s a lot of browns and greys here. It makes sense, given both the setting and a more “filmic” colour palette, but Minecraft is such a colourful property, as are all of the LEGO Minecraft sets, so it’s noticeable how little colour there is here.

The same can probably be said of the final part of the build, which is a brick-built representation of one of A Minecraft Movie’s fearsome antagonists, though again it’s movie-accurate so the colour scheme is to be expected.
Thankfully, the Great Hog is pretty fun to piece together with some fun bits of articulation and an interesting heady and body build that also feature a couple of printed parts to make up the Hog’s eyes. The silhouette of the character build here is definitely eye-catching, so the Great Hog winds up being one the cooler components of this set. I’m also somewhat surprised at the fact that we’ve got some LEGO nipple jewelry depiction here – dare I say the first ever? It’s not something I’m sure I can comfortably Google, if I’m being honest.

Final Thoughts

Finished and arranged together, the Woodland Mansion Fighting Ring is a nice little set that’s clearly geared towards younger builders (well, 10+) who’ll have gone out and seen A Minecraft Movie and are keen to recreate an action-packed scene at home. The gamified interactivity and the pleasing designs of the minifigures and Great Hog definitely make this one interesting, though the muted browns and greys are a harsh reminder of what Hollywood tends to do to otherwise-vivid colour palettes when translating them to the big screen.
