Review: LEGO Build-a-Minifigure (BAM) Q3 2022 selection

It’s September, and we have a fresh batch of LEGO Build-a-Minifigure exclusives making their way into LEGO Stores round the world for the third quarter (Q3) release of 2022!

There are 10 new characters to collect, and I was lucky enough to pick some up in one of my recent visits to the LEGO Store, so here’s a quick review at some of the Q3 BAM minifigures!

What are LEGO Build-a-Minifigure (BAM) exclusives?

In case you’re new to this, LEGO have been releasing new (and sometimes exclusives) into Build a Minifigure (BAM) stations that you’ll find at LEGO Stores. These are usually released on a quarterly basis, and are an intentional strategy to attract LEGO and Minifigure fans in-store.

You can customise your minifigures, and select a wig/hairpiece, head, torso, legs, and one accessory for these 3-pack blister packs which cost US$9.99 / AU$19.99.

If you want to get your hands on these, check your local LEGO Store, or if you’re in Australia and can’t get to a LEGO Certified Store, you can order them from the LEGO Certified Store’s website.

Some stores also send these new characters pre-packed, but that depends on your local store policy.

Official Q3 BAM Minifigures

Here’s a full gallery of all the official Q3 Build-a-Minifigure images, so technically, if you want them to be “stock” characters as LEGO intended, these are how they are setup, for reference.

La Catrina

Here’s a look at the La Catrina minifigure, which is hands down my favourite from the Q3 2022 release. It features a minifigure version of La Catrina, the symbol and icon of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), a Mexican holiday.

The printed details on the new and exclusive head is exquisite, with morbidly beautiful eyes, and details such as a heart to make the skeletal more approachable.

She comes with the Bellatrix Lestrange hairpiece, and also an exclusive torso, with some nice details such as gold trim, and a rose necklace, as well as a printed sloped dress piece with frills down the front.

Here’s the back printing, which has more of those lovely roses on the back, as well as frills down the sloped back. For an accessory, La Catrina comes with a pink handbag.

This isn’t LEGO’s first go at La Catrina, as she has previously made an appearance as a LEGO Brickheadz in 40492 La Catrina, which is also one of my favourite Brickheadz ever.

And yes, she also goes great with the Skeleton Mariachi from the Q3 2021 Build-a-Minifigure release!

The Witch

Up next we have The Witch, another Halloween-themed minifigure. LEGO have done plenty of witches, but this version sports a new recoloured hat, which comes in black, with orange hair fused to it.

She also sports a really cool Spider-themed outfit, with a new and exclusive torso and matching dress.

Here’s a look at the back printing, which has more of that starry patterns across both her torso and sloped piece.

For her accessory, she comes with a purple potion Erlenmeyer Flask – so good to see withcraft and science working in harmony.

This isn’t LEGO’s first crack at witches, but I really like this version’s colour scheme and design – the orange hair contrasts very nicely against the black, silver and purple outfit.

The Bat Boy

Here’s a look at The Bat Boy, for those wanting a proper Halloween-costumed minifigure. The bat arms make a return in medium lavender, and he also comes with a black spider as an accessory.

There’s a lot to like such as the eye mask, and fun little details such as lollies (candy), and a lollipop spilling out of his black jacket, suggesting a rather successful trick or treat haul.

Here’s a look at the back which unfortunately doesn’t have any back printing.

At least he has a dual-sided face, which has a happy smile. The Bat Boy is also missing a tooth, suggesting that he’s at an age where he’s losing his baby teeth OR that too much sweets has caused him to suffer tooth decay. It’s up to you to interpret it.

The Scarecrow

Last but not least but the Halloween-themed minifigures is The Scarecrow, with a Jack O’Lantern headgear, and pitchfork as an accessory.

At first glance, his torso seems rather generic, as LEGO have done quite a number of red shirt torsos with green overalls, but this appears to be a brand new torso, as the lines on the red shirt are yellow instead of blue.

Correction: The Scarecrow’s torso is not unique or exclusive, as it’s also available in the LEGO City 60287 Tractor. Apologies for the oversight and thanks to Jake for the email about this!

Popping off the Jack O’Lantern also reveals a brand new Scarecrow minifigure head, with some really neat details like yellow and green button eyes, as well as some straw peeking out!

BAM Halloween Q3 2022

It’s really great to see so much love given to this festive Halloween Build-a-Minifigure selection for 2022, and for those celebrating Halloween, these would make a fine addition to your line-up of trick or treaters!

Street Dancer

Up next is the Street Dancer, a generic City-type minifigure. She’s meant to come with a black “Karen” hairstyle, but I didn’t realise that I picked up the wrong hairpiece until I got home.

Oh well. She does come with a brand new minty varsity jacket torso, which has some music notations on it, as well as a shorter crop-top underneath.

I’m not sure if the legs are new, but I’ve never seen this variety with cargo pockets on the front, so it’s safe to say that these are new. The teal boom box isn’t new, and has made an appearance in LEGO Minifigures Series 20, as well as a few Vidiyo minifigures.

Here’s a look at her back printing on her torso, and dual-sided face. The torso does feel like it belongs to a LEGO Vidiyo character!

The PJ Girl

Next we have this adorable PJ Girl, who’s dressed in minty striped pyjamas and comes with a stuffed bunny as an accessory. She has a big freckly smile, and blonde pigtails for her hairpiece.

Here’s a look at her back printing, and dual-sided asleep face. It’s a shame that the lovely mint stripes aren’t present on her arms, or short legs.

Paired together with Series 20’s Pyjama Girl, they look all set for their very own sleepover!

The Sailor

Next we have a Sailor minifigure, a character/occupation that we haven’t seen since 2011’s LEGO Minifigures Series 4. He has a brand new torso, with a neckerchief, and vertical blue stripes.

Update: Apologies, the torso isn’t new, but was previously exclusive to 40487 Sailboat Adventures. Thanks to Micah for the heads up!

For his face, he has sunglasses, and the thickest pair of eyebrows I’ve seen in a minifigure. It’s always great to see the Rubber Ducky accessory make a return, and I expect this to be a very popular accessory choice in Build a Minifigure stations.

Here’s a look at the Sailor’s dual-sided head, and back printing. You can really appreciate his thick eyebrows from this view!

The Boy Scout

Last but not least is my second favourite character introduced in this batch – the Boy Scout! I picked the cap with hair for this minifigure, as I felt it was a much better fit, but the main draw is the new and exclusive torso, with a khaki shirt, red neckerchief, and a lovely merit badge sash.

The Boy Scout comes with a magnifying glass as an accessory – useful to start fires in the absence of matches!

Here’s a look at the back printing, which has the continuation of his sash, as well as the neckerchief peeking out.

It’s genuinely surprising that it’s taken this long for LEGO to produce a proper Scout minifigure, and I can imagine that this will be an immensely popular pick for those have a close connection to the Scouts.

I didn’t pick up a Grandpa or Pizza Delivery Guy as I wasn’t drawn to any of the parts, which aren’t exclusive to Build a Minifigure. The addition of the brown bulldog to Build a Minifigure station is a nice bonus, and I can see it being a popular accessory!

And that’s it for my short review of the Build-a-Minifigure (BAM) Q3 2022 minifigures. It’s a really great lineup, and I especially love the Boy Scout, and the group of Halloween characters, especially La Catrina.
