The Mimic Dice Box comes with a special yellow box, which is bad news because it is an indicator that there will be very limited numbers of these sets produced.
This Yellow GWP Box is reserved for very limited run GWPs, with the most infamous one being the Ulysses Space Probe, which caused a lot of anguish amongst fans who missed out, so much so that LEGO brought it back again, a whole year later.
Here’s a look at the contents. The instruction manual has its own slot, and doubles as the box cover, and unlike regular LEGO sets, the parts for the Mimic Dice Box come in a large ziploc bag.
This is a tell-tale sign that there will be limited numbers of these, as sets that come in ziploc bags like these are usually packed by hand, or manually, and not in typical LEGO manufacturing lines, which produced sealed numbered plastic bags.
The build was quick, but quite a pleasant experience. It’s quite sizeable, measuring 10-studs wide.
It’s designed to be a dice box, but even if you don’t have a need to store your D20s, it makes for a compact decorative model, with some interactivity as you can open and close its mouth.
That and you can also store other small items in it.
Looking closer, you’ll notice that the Mimic’s eyes are printed, which is a nice sign, and the bright blue tongue sticks out in a menacing fashion.

The Mimic does look kinda funny without its tongue!
And here’s a bunch of D20s inside it. There’s quite a lot of space, and I managed to fix 6 regular-sized D20s and one small one till it couldn’t take any more.
That’s one very full Mimic!
Of course, apart from it being a Dice Box, you can of course, incorporate it into your LEGO D&D campaigns as a supersized mimic! Here it is being ganged up on by the D&D party.

Final Thoughts:
This is a really neat LEGO Gift with Purchase that greatly complements the 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale set, and also appeals to those that play D&D or have a need to store their massive hoard of dice.
It was designed by Jordan Scott, LEGO Ideas Design Manager, who himself is a massive DnD fan, and while he didn’t get to personally design the huge Ideas set, jumped at the opportunity to design a D&D set, which is how this set came about.
It will irk fans who aren’t quite in a position to drop US$359.99 at launch to pick up 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale, and I do admit that this would be a great sell at the US$20 pricepoint, however it’s pertinent to remember that GWPs are little bonus sets that normally would not be able to be made otherwise.
Plus, it feels like a decent-enough reward for diehard LEGO and D&D fans to buy the set at launch. Lest we forget that when Rivendell launched, all we got were some Brickheadz, so this feels like a much nicer thanks to the fans.
I do have real concerns about the Limited Edition nature of this set, and I really hope that LEGO have forecasted demand for this GWP and made enough to go around, but seeing this Yellow Box doesn’t fill me with much confidence, and so if this is something that you’d really like, I’d be waiting for the clock to hit midnight to give you the best chance of securing yours.
Don’t hesitate, because this will sell out really quickly, along with 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale when it launches for LEGO Insiders on 1 April 2024.
