Review: LEGO Classic Space Tic Tac Toe (Insiders Reward)

Is this the closest we’ll ever get to a LEGO Classic Space Battle Pack?

LEGO’s Black Friday 2024 offers will kick off from 29 November to 2 December 2024 and along with the launch of the 10335 The Endurance, we’ll also see a whole bunch of new LEGO Insiders rewards that you can redeem with your Insiders Points.

5008897 Tic Tac Toe will be making its debut on 28 November 2024, and can be yours for 2,400 Insiders Points! Not bad for a set containing an incredible 5 Orange and 5 White Classic Space Astronauts. Well kinda, because they’re not fully kitted out.

Ahead of its launch on 28 November, here’s a quick review at what to expect from this LEGO Classic Space Tic Tac Toe Insiders reward to let you decide whether its worth spending 2,400 points!

Special thanks to LEGO for sending this set over for review

Like all yellow box GWPs, the set’s manual doubles as the cover of the box and the contents are packed into a nondescript ziploc bag.

The contents are super basic, and this just looks like a LEGO Pick a Brick online order!

Here’s a look at the Tic Tac Toe (or Noughts & Crosses) board which is fairly basic, but has studs for you to place the minifigures on. To spice the board up a little, there’s a white microscale rover, plus an opalescent gem.

With 5 astronauts a-piece, there’s enough space (heh) for all 9 to fill the board, plus one odd man out.

Here’s a look at the Orange and White Classic Space astronauts. They’re not exactly Classic in the sense that they don’t have the simple smiley faces, and

You’ll need the Orange Airtanks and White Airtanks as well as the original LEGO minifigure smiley faces to complete the look. They’re in stock from Pick a Brick online so if you’re ordering anything for Black Friday, it shouldn’t hurt to add 10 airtanks to your order.

Also, LEGO have included transparent visors, which is a little odd as they don’t quite fit right and aesthetically, they just look odd. Here’s an orthodox white Classic Space astronaut for comparison.

So is this worth it? 2,400 points is worth about AU$27. Each Classic Space astronaut you assemble on Pick a Brick (sans air tanks), costs AU$3.70, so 10x minifigures will retail for AU$37 making this a pretty good deal if you want to expand your lineup of Classic Space minifigures.

Even more so as Orange Classic Space torsos are already sold out, and not likely to come back in stock, so this is likely your last chance to get them directly from LEGO!

I’d say, if you have surplus Insider Points, especially from last weekend’s Double Points promotion, it’ll be a good set to redeem the code for especially as you have 90 days to place an order. With so many Classic Space minifigures in this, I can see 5008897 Tic Tac Toe being especially popular and will likely sell out, so be sure to redeem this just after midnight on 29 November to avoid missing out!

Thanks, it worked for me now.

  2. Forthonswing says:

I had an error initially but was able to redeem a code about twenty minutes ago.

  3. HC says:

Cannot redeem in Australia too. Just gives an error

  4. Kellie says:

Is anyone else getting an error when trying to redeem one copy of this reward?

  5. Hannoz says:

The book with orange spaceman says on the cover that it contains an exclusive minifigure. So my guess is they didn’t include air tanks and classic faces here and also in the space diner GWP to keep that statement valid….

  6. Robert says:

IMHO, not worth 2400 points. If it was a ‘free’ GWP even then it’s not something I’d go out of my way to get, though those grey quarter circle parts would be useful in MOCs.

  7. Julie Bourne says:

I was hoping to get this for my daughter but found out only people with points can buy it.

  8. Mark says:

I’d argue that 70841 Benny’s Space Squad was the closest we’ve gotten to a Classic Space Battle Pack, but this promo would be a close second if released a reasonable quantity limit. The lack of O2 tanks is a bit disappointing, but nonetheless I’m glad to see the scarcity of other orange astronaut parts being mitigated.

  9. Major Forestman Tom says:

I’m assuming the air tank made the board too crowded and caused pieces to be dislodged when they play tested it maybe. Still a duff move tho’. At least they didn’t use the motorcycle helmets to better match the visors…

  10. Andy says:

It is a bit strange they opted to include those clear visors and omit the oxygen tanks. I assume it’s all down to cost, but if that was the case, why include the visors at all?

I’m tempted, but I already made a big purchase during insiders weekend so will probably not risk spending the points only to have it sold out when I make my next order.

Plus, there’s only so far you can go with a Tick-Tack-Toe game.

At any rate, hopefully it will flood the aftermarket with orange spaceman parts making them cheaper.
