2025 LEGO Lunar New Year and Monkie Kid sets revealed at CIIE Shanghai!

LEGO has unveiled its collection of 2025 Chinese New Year sets at CIIE 2024 at Shanghai! To commemorate the Year of the Snake, there will be 3 new celebrating the Lunar New Year/Spring Festival which begins on 29 January 2025.

80116 Trotting Lantern and 80117 Good Fortune will be released in Asia Pacific on 25 December 2024, and in the US, UK, Europe and other countries on 1 January 2025, along with the new Monkie Kid Sets too.

Two new Monkie Kid sets have also been revealed with 80065 Erlang’s Celestial Mech and 80066 Mythical Creature Qilin. Erlang is based on the the 3-eyed Chinese warrior god with iconic 3-pronged spear, and celestial dog Xiaotian Quan. The Qilin is also based on the mythical unicorn creature which is popular in Chinese folklore.

The LEGO Lunar New Year sets are leaning heavily into traditional symbols, with 80117 Good Fortune featuring these gorgeous brick-built symbols that include a traditional fan, mandarin, gold ingots and coins, calligraphy, and an ornate ceramic vase.

80116 Trotting Lantern on the other hand doubles as a traditional Chinese lantern, which opens up to reveal some small living spaces, and also includes a Chinese Zodiac Year of the Snake minifigure.

There is a new Dumpling element which is really cool, and what looks like a nod to a future Light Blue Classic Space astronaut!

  1. Andrew H says:

I will definitely be getting the trotting Lantern, since I have been trying to collect the CNY minifigures. I have a few holes though. Also, I will definitely be getting the lucky cat! I LOVE the dumpling piece!

  2. Mat says:

Weird pricing across regions, but for once I won’t complain about it. We get a good deal on the trotting lantern in Australia, and that’s the one I’m most interested in.

My only regret is that it comes with “only” 5 minifigs, bit of a letdown after last year’s 13 in the family reunion set, but I guess this one has less space for minifigs.

  3. GURVINDER SINGH GANDU says:

I will be buying real CNY sets from domestic brands!

  4. stello says:

All these sets are so amazing, I really want to get the Lucky Cat but I’m not sure $50 for that is worth it! Nothing can beat this years Auspicious Dragon though, I always love the yearly zodiac minifigures too (the snake one is so cool) & collect them but they are always in expensive sets.

  5. Mr.Lee says:

Compared to last year’s incredible Auspicious Dragon 80112 & the beautiful Family Reunion Celebration 80113 I find these sets less appealing.
And what happened to 80114 & 80115, and why is the Lucky Cat not part of the 80XXX series but 40-series?

  6. stezton says:

As a lover of all things Asian, those sets are awesome. Maneki Neko is the one most in my price range and I collect Maneki Neko so it’s perfect.

  7. SBreshears says:

Every year I look at the Lunar New Year sets in awe. They are always stunning and so very creative.

  8. Håkan says:

The proportions of the Lucky Cat feels a bit off, as it lacks a neck, but maybe it’s Buddhist…

  9. Prequelfan says:

Nice sets. Can’t enjoy them. End of the world is coming in US.

  10. Linda says:

As stunning as Lunar new year sets look like, the decorative sets are not my cup of tea. There are too many expensive sets to be purchased in 2025 before they retire so these are easy to pass. However, the zodiac costume and some torsos are must-buy when they will be stocked in PaB online.

When it comes to Monkie King, Qilin looks pretty promising but it’s surprising Lego didn’t release any location set in this wave. Hopefully, it doesn’t mean the end of the theme since MK minifigures are one of the most creative and detailed figures alongside Dreamzzz. It’s always a pleasure to check the new wave because the parts are simply perfect for custom fantasy minifigures.

  11. Danni says:

I want a big version of that vase, love it! And lucky cat – so cute. Going on the wishlist.
