We are an unusual partnership of talent, devotion, and industry. We make each piece of Freestone Pottery individually by hand in our studio, tucked away in the beautiful countryside of northwestern Rhode Island. We have been making pottery together since 1985, first in Tiverton, RI, then in middle Tennessee for twenty-two years, and now back in RI, in Foster as of August 2008. Our work is known by its fine craftsmanship and unique decoration: the surface of most of our work is graced with inspirational verses from the Bible and other sources, or your choice of wording, and with lovely brushwork flower designs. Each letter is carved into the clay, one by one, and each leaf and petal is created by hand, stroke by stroke. Freestone Pottery wants to be taken home, to be used, to speak to you about the hopeful and encouraging things in life, and to sit in the kitchen with the family. The popularity of our unique work has grown enormously over the years, mostly by word of mouth from delighted customers all over the USA and abroad. The combining of words and clay is not a new idea; it's as old as the Sumerian cuneiform clay tablets from the 30th century BC. But we think we do it in a unique and special way~ the comforting words of the Bible and the wisdom of New Englanders and others are our inspiration, but we love to carve in the words each customer would like, as everyone has a favorite bit of writing they would like to see on the pottery of their choice. Our pottery is meant for daily use at home. It is Oven, Microwave, and Dishwasher safe. We use no lead in our clay or glazes, so that our pottery is safe for food. Avoid sudden changes of temperature. Instead, give the pottery time to expand with heat and contract with cold. When you bake , for example, place your pottery in the oven filled with your favorite recipe, then turn the oven on and allow the pottery to heat up slowly with your food.
